Case-Shiller U.S. Real Home Price Index
Chart Description
The Case-Shiller Real U.S. Home Price Index is a real (inflation adjusted) home price index for the United States based on repeat sales of the same homes. This chart shows monthly data for this index when available and yearly otherwise. Even though this chart only goes back to the year 1900, the data in in this chart is scaled such that the index has a value of 100 in the year 1890 because that is the way Robert Shiller scales it. The vertical axis uses a log scale to better illustrate the relative size of index value changes. This chart shows the change in U.S. national real home prices over time. The data in this chart is calculated by taking the data in Case-Shiller U.S. Home Price Index, dividing it by U.S. CPI - Monthly, and scaling it as mentioned.
